Sleep apnea is just one of several common sleep disorders and the most widespread form of sleep apnea is known as obstructive sleep apnea and is a condition marked by periods in which breathing ceases while sleeping. On occasions this disorder is called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome or sleep apnea syndrome.

In healthy people the muscles which work the upper part of the throat ensure that the air flow in and out of the lungs is steady and continuous. During sleep these muscles relax a little but still do their job properly. However those people who have sleep apnea often have airways which are narrowed so that when the throat muscles relax the airway partially or completely closes thereby no longer allowing for the passage of air to the lungs. Snoring and labored breathing resulting in a sleep apnea episode will then result.

In some individuals breathing can also cease completely during periods of deep (or REM) sleep and medical experts and researchers are nor clear about just why this happens. These periods during which breathing ceases can last for ten seconds or more in severe cases and are referred to as apneic events or sleep apnea episodes.

These apneic events result in a degree of awareness that you have ceases breathing and you subsequently struggle to breath again which is normally accompanied by choking, gasping or even snorting.

Thereafter it is normal to settle into a period of light sleep before the cycle of sleep apnea episodes starts again.

The effect is that an individual suffers from fragmented sleep which does not allow them the amount of rest that they require on a nightly basis. This in turn leads to a number of health problems including excessive daytime tiredness. One of the reasons for this daytime symptom is simply that the level of oxygen in the blood stream falls tremendously during an apneic event leading to a condition known as hypoxia.

It is most important to realize that a lot of individuals with sleep apnea are unaware that they have a problem and often it must be left to others to point out the problem. Sufferers are generally aware of being very tired throughout the day but do not always know why this is so.

The commonest warning signs of sleep apnea include loud snoring, waking in the morning and still feeling tired, headaches in the morning, problems with memory, alterations in personality, falling asleep at inopportune times, hypertension, excessive levels of activity (in children only) and swelling of the legs in severe cases. The symptoms ought not to be disregarded because the danger of sleep apnea is very real.

The first step in diagnosing sleep apnea ought to a visit to the doctor who will read through your medical history and examine your mouth, throat and neck for signs of any growths or abnormalities. If your doctor suspects that you have sleep apnea he will refer you for a sleep study and what is called a polysomnogram (or PSG). This test records eye movement, brain waves, breathing rate, muscle activity, oxygen levels in the blood, heart rate and the quantity of air that is being both exhaled and inhaled during sleep.

Sleep apnea is an all too common sleep disorder which frequently goes unrecognized but which can be very dangerous and which can also normally be effectively treated.

Have you heard of the condition called sleep apnea? Has your doctor told you that you have this condition? If so you need to address it immediately as it is very dangerous and in extreme cases can even be deadly.

The term “apnea” refers to a cessation of breathing. Swimmers practice static apnea, meaning holding their breath for longer periods of time. If you have sleap apnea, you stop breathing while you sleep. Normally, this would last for only a few seconds, the body is able to protect itself from this type of problem with all of its safeguards. If a person with sleep apnea stops breathing during the night the body will typically trigger reactions to get it breathing again. But usually this involves actually waking up if even for a few seconds so breathing can be started. The sufferer may not even realize that he or she is waking up during the night and so when they get up the next day and are still very tired, they don’t understand why that is. In reality those who have extreme cases of sleap apnea may wake up several times during the night which means they never get the quality, deep sleep that they need and that’s important for their overall health. So they go through their day feeling fatigued and rundown and not realizing why. This lack of quality sleep is related to many health problems, including daytime drowsiness, headaches, mood swings and irritability, and a buildup of toxins in the blood. Because the body actually stops breathing, even momentarily, sleep apnea can also cause brain damage because the brain is not supposed to go without oxygen for any length of time, even those few moment.~Sleep apnea can also cause brain damage because the brain is not supposed to go without oxygen for any length of time, even those few moment, because the body actually stops breathing, even momentarily. In some cases a patient has not been able to wake up in order to get themselves breathing again and this has resulted in death.

You may dismiss sleap apnea as a mere annoyance but in reality it’s a very serious condition and one that should be addressed as soon as possible. A doctor can perform a physical exam and give recommendations for treating your own case of sleep apnea and in some cases a CPAP machine might be recommended to keep oxygen coming into the body on a regular basis. It may be time to do something about an obesity problem if it is this that is causing your condition. It could be that you just need to shift some excess weight.

You may be one of the many people who have heard of sleep apnea and are wondering what exactly the signs are. Sleep apnea is becoming more and more common these days and it’s not a minor inconvenience that should be ignored. Sleep apnea, if ignored, can cause toxins in the blood to build up until you run the risk of damage to muscles and organs – the brain included. So, if you think there is a chance that you have sleep apnea what should you do about it?

Firstly, when asking what the signs of signs of sleep apnea are remember that just because you have restless nights when you keep waking up it does not mean that you have sleep apnea. You could be waking up because you’ve drunk too much coffee, you’re under stress or even simply because of a lack of exercise. So what’s the difference between sleep apnea and just general problems sleeping?

Drowsiness during the day, irritability and mood swings, chronic headaches, muscle aches, sore throat and neck stiffness in the morning are all symptoms of sleep apnea. During the night, choking, gasping, wheezing, and loud snoring are also symptoms. Symptoms such as these can be particularly significant to sleepapnes because they area sign that the body has breathing problems during sleep. You have to be aware of both night and day symptoms. Sometimes people can have chronic headaches for a variety of reasons or may be experiencing mood swings and irritability due to hormones, stress, problems on the job or with one’s personal life, and so on. However, gasping, choking, wheezing, and loud snoring during the night are almost always signs of sleep apnea.

Anyway sleep apnea should not be self-diagnosed so if you suspect you might have it then you must really visit your doctor. Sleep apnea, in the worst cases can be deadly, so take any fears seriously and get yourself checked out.

Sleep apnea occurs when you regularly stop breathing for ten seconds or longer during sleep, and is caused by a blockage or narrowing of the airways in your nose, mouth or throat. This stoppage can unknowingly occur hundreds of times a night. Sleep apnea is a very serious sleep disorder that requires immediate treatment. Because it is a progressive illness, the symptoms can worsen and eventually lead to other medical conditions that can be life threatening. If you have been diagnosed with this malady or suspect that you have it, then read on for more information on the options for treating sleep apnea and the possible side effects.

There are four basic approaches to apnea treatment, and they can be used in conjunction with one another. The simplest method involves changing the circumstances which may be causing the condition. The patient is advised to lose weight, quit smoking, avoid alcohol and sedative drugs, have a regular sleep schedule and try to sleep only on their side. The most common treatment option is using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in the upper airway to support and hold the airway open. This involves wearing a CPAP mask over the nose. The mask provides a supply of continuously flowing air via a flexible plastic hose from a CPAP machine. Studies have shown that when patients use CPAP, they not only slept better and were more alert during the day, but there were significant improvements in the size, shape and pumping action of their hearts.

The third apnea treatment option is the use of a dental splint to prevent the jaw and tongue from moving back and narrowing the airway. However, oral devices have not proved to be as effective as CPAP and the appliances can be uncomfortable. The fourth and most extreme form of treatment is surgery. This kind of procedure involves removal of the part of the soft palate that hangs down in the back of the throat, as well as the tonsils if present, and other soft tissue if it is felt to be excessive. This procedure is usually reserved for patients with severe sleep apnea.

Once you’ve been diagnosed with sleep apnea, it’s important that you pursue treatment immediately. It’s also important to follow your prescribed treatment faithfully. While wearing a dental splint or a CPAP mask may seem uncomfortable at first, you’ll soon get used to it. A few nights of discomfort will be worth it once you see how a good night of sleep improves your overall health. People who have undergone sleep apnea treatment have reported fewer headaches, clearer thinking, improved performance at work and better moods.

Getting immediate treatment for this sleep problem will improve your quality of life. Talk to your doctor if you’re having trouble with your treatment. He can suggest ways to make your care easier or help you to explore alternatives. His or her advice will make treating sleep apnea a simple part of your day that you can’t live without.

Sleep disorders can affect a individual’s day to day living. They do not go through the right sleep cycles and their day to day lives begin to be harmed from the deficiency of restful sleep. The conditions can be dangerous. A medical condition known as sleep apnea where the individual actually stops breathing when. It is very dangerous and life threatening if not treated properly. You don’t have to continue to suffering. Even in the event that snoring has become a problem, there are instruments to assist you get a quality nights sleep and feel well rested in the morning hours. Click here for more information:

Sleep apnea is possibly the most commonly seen sleep disorder and affects in the region of 18,000,000 Americans. A sleeping disorder which is characterized by interrupted breathing while sleeping, it is also without doubt the most dangerous of all sleeping disorders because it starves the brain of critical oxygen and occasionally proves fatal.

There are two very different types of sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea is essentially a neurological condition in which breathing is broken because of signals sent out by the brain. Obstructive sleep apnea is essentially a mechanical problem where the windpipe is obstructed either by too much tissue or as a result of the unusual collapse or relaxation of the muscles around the windpipe. In both cases however the results are effectively the same with repeated interruptions to the breathing that starve the brain of oxygen and place sufferers at greater risk from such things as high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack.

Regrettably, diagnosing sleep apnea can be difficult because snoring, which is one of its commonest symptoms and frequently leads to sleep apnea being called the snoring disease, is also often seen as a symptom of various medical conditions. Snoring is certainly normally present with sleep apnea as the brain counters a lack of oxygen by awakening the sufferer sufficiently to restart breathing and this usually produces snoring.

This frequent awakening throughout the night also results in a poor quality of sleep and it is quite common for sleep apnea sufferers to get up in the morning feeling even more tired than they were when they went to bed. This also results in a feeling of sheer exhaustion during the course of the day and an overwhelming wish to sleep.

However, tiredness resulting from a poor quality of sleep is just part of the problem and a variety of other symptoms will also generally be seen including headaches in the morning, a lack of memory and a problem in maintaining concentration.

Left untreated the increasing exhaustion from sleep apnea can lead to major psychological difficulties starting with simple tetchiness and moving on to depression with clear changes in both mood and behavior.

Both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea can be treated and, provided the problem is diagnosed at an early stage, treatment can often be fairly simple. For instance, mild cases of obstructive sleep apnea caused by nasal congestion can generally be treated with nothing more than a course of decongestants. Likewise, many cases of sleep apnea which are not too serious may be treated with the use of a mask that is worn during sleep and that delivers air at a constant pressure in order to keep the airway open. Lastly, in the most severe cases surgery might be necessary and can be very effective, although it may also lead to numerous complications and must be considered with care.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember about sleep apnea is that because it carries the potential risk of respiratory failure sufferers ought not to be tempted to use sleeping pills or to take other types of artificial sleep enhancers without first seeking the approval of a doctor.

Natural sleep remedies can without doubt provide an effective complement to prescribed treatments and herbal remedies which are designed to improve both the duration and quality of sleep can be helpful in the management of the excessive daytime sleepiness often brought on by sleep apnea. Also, such things as chromatherapy, aromatherapy and guided relaxation and meditation can help in reducing the anxiety and insomnia that come with sleep apnea.

An ancient myth told of the plight of Undine, a nymph condemned to a life of sleeplessness out of fear she would stop breathing while asleep and die. Modern science calls it sleep apnea.

The ailment — an interruption of breathing during sleep — also is known as ”Undine’s Curse,” and it afflicts a large number of middle-aged, overweight men, many who unknowingly suffer the condition.

Sleep apnea goes all the way back to Greek mythology. We’re finally getting the upper hand on it by diagnosing those who didn’t even know they were affected.

The condition also has been diagnosed in infants who can be aroused from lapses in breathing by being shaken, an action that doctors say awakens the baby and forces the brain to message the lungs to begin functioning again. Sleep apnea in the case of infants is the cause of sudden infant death syndrome, for which there is no known cure.

The condition now is being diagnosed with the help of a computer and electrodes that monitor patients at home while they sleep. The computer, in use at several medical centres around the country, is among the most accurate of devices capable of monitoring the sometimes life-threatening disorder, Johns explained.

The system uses a mesh halter to which electrodes are fixed and stuck on the chests of patients to measure a series of vital functions, including the length of time between breaths.

The halter and electrodes are placed on the patient at the clinic and worn home. At night, while the patient sleeps, the electrodes are plugged into a small box that records the patient’s sleep patterns.

The system measures heart rate, lung function, oxygen saturation in the blood and paradoxing which is the opposite movement of chest and abdomen.

He said the monitoring box is brought back to the clinic the next morning, at which time the data collected during the night is fed into and analyzed by a computer.

If the patient is apneic, the computer might show decreased respiration during sleep, a decrease in heart rate and a desaturation of oxygen in the blood stream.

The operation is similar to a tonsilectomy and involves removal of tissue at the back of the throat, which enlarges air passages to enable unobstructed breathing. Other surgical methods also successfully treat sleep apnea caused by nasal deformity or nasal polyps.

The computerized diagnostic method also helps determine if the patient suffers from other types of sleeping and breathing disorders, primarily central nervous system dysfunction in which the brain is not telling the lungs and diaphragm to move.

If you feel tired during the day even after a regular night’s sleep and snore very loudly during sleep cycles, then you could be suffering from sleep apnia. Another sign that you could have some form of sleep disorder is when you have been observed to stop breathing several times for certain periods of time during sleep. So how to sleep better?

Sleep aids include sleep medication and sleep devices and even surgeries. Apart from these, changing personal habits could help in in curing sleep apnia.

Nicotine is an addictive substance that should be avoided as it has no benefits for your body. Drop the smoking habit and while you’re at it, avoid alcohol and medicines that cause drowsiness because these substances interrupt your sleep cycles by preventing your airways from staying open during sleep.

If you are overweight, go on a sensible diet and exercise regime that not only helps keep your body in shape and increase self confidence, your health improves and reduces symptoms of sleep apnia. By sleeping on your side, you can keep your airway open during sleep cycles.

Specially designed masks that use air pressure to force airways to stay open during sleep are recommended by some doctors. Among other devices available are CPAP machines that prevent your tongue from falling to the back of your throat whch can block the breathing passage. Misalign teeth and saliva build up are some uncomfortable side effects from using these devices. Also, headaches, dry nose and dry mouth may be experienced by users of anti-snoring devices.

You can also consider undergoing surgery to help with your sleep apena disorder. Consult your doctor who will be able to provide you with more information. Excess flesh from the uvula is removed from the back of the throat while the soft palate and pharynx are made tighter. There are also options for nasal surgeries that help with sleep cycles and improve the sleep apnia condition.

Despite the fact that we have known for a long time that children who suffer from sleep apnea commonly get relatively low scores on IQ tests (normally scoring an average of 85 as opposed to a score of 101 for children who are not suffering from sleep apnea) one thing which has not been known until recently is that this arises out of chemical changes within the brain. As a result an otherwise bright child may well produce a second-rate performance as a result of nothing more than a sleeping problem that, in almost all cases, can be treated quite simply.

In a recent study carried out in Baltimore, 31 kids aged between 6 and 16 (19 of whom were suffering from severe sleep apnea) were examined with a special form or MRI and it was discovered that those children suffering from sleep apnea displayed significant changes in the right frontal cortex and hippocampus which are areas of the brain which are associated with learning and higher mental function.

This study also discovered that these kids were suffering from levels of three brain chemicals which were indicative of brain damage. This change to the chemistry of the brain resulting from sleep apnea may or may not be permanent and, at this point, further studies will be necessary to see if this effect can be reversed.

Even if reversal is possible however and the brain chemistry and cognitive function can be normalized, kids with sleep apnea will suffer learning problems as long as they have untreated sleep apnea and will certainly not be able to rewind time and regain this period of learning.

Parents should of course already be looking out for the signs of sleep apnea in their kids but this study clearly indicates that an early diagnosis and treatment of this sleep problem may have a substantial affect on a child’s success in life.

The signs of sleep apnea include frequent pauses in breathing during sleep which often result in an arousal from sleep and to tossing and turning in bed. Children may also display labored or loud breathing, snoring, gasping, coughing and, sometimes, bedwetting at an age when should generally have passed.

Parents might also notice that a child is sleeping in a strange position, perhaps with their bottom pointing up into the air and their head tilted back in an unconscious effort to keep their airway clear.

In very many cases child sleep apnea can be treated by removing the tonsils and adenoids, or excess tissue from the nose or the back of the throat. In addition, a continuous positive airways pressure machine (or pediatric CPAP) may also be employed to give the child a flow of air delivered through a mask worn while sleeping to keep the airway open.

In itself sleep apnea is debilitating for any child and the effect of night after night of inadequate sleep are going to take their toll on your child. But, when you combine this with an impairment of your child’s IQ, it becomes essential that you act at the earliest possible opportunity to get the condition diagnosed and treated.

Sleep apnea symptoms are most commonly observed in men who are over forty and also overweight although they can appear at any age in both women and men and are being seen increasingly in children.

The clearest symptom of sleep apnea (which is only one of several common sleep disorders) is snoring which is difficult to spot yourself and often needs to be pointed out to you by a sleeping partner. However, there are many reasons for snoring and the mere fact that you snore is not in itself an indication that you have sleep apnea. It is a fact however that most sleep apnea sufferers snore.

The second clear symptom of sleep apnea is undue tiredness during the day. Sleep apnea sufferers stop breathing frequently while sleeping and the body’s natural reaction is to wake you enough for you to start breathing again, but not sufficiently for you to be conscious of the fact that you are being awakened. This means that your sleep is constantly interrupted and therefore very light so that you do not enjoy the deep sleep that your body needs. As a consequence you grow more and more tired during the day.

If left untreated the effects of sleep apnea begin to appear and you will start to experience further symptoms which could include headaches (particularly in the morning), tetchiness and even depression. You may also notice that you are beginning to put on weight.

Yet another not quite so obvious symptom of sleep apnea is an increase in blood pressure that can give rise to several cardiovascular difficulties. If you are one of the increasing number of people who are starting to monitor their own blood pressure regularly at home then you should pick this up fairly easily but, otherwise, it will not be found unless and until you visit your doctor for a routine physical.

One further symptom is that of increasing difficulties with memory retention and learning difficulties. This is once again not something that it is easy for you to notice yourself but other people might well notice that you are not as fast on the uptake as you once were.

Finally, some sleep apnea sufferers will notice a decline in sexual function that can result in impotency.

Any of these symptoms in isolation can of course be indicative of just about any problem you can think of. When you begin to see these symptoms appearing alongside one another however there is a good chance that you are suffering from sleep apnea and you should consult your physician and consider having a sleep apnea test.

A contemporary study indicates clearly that a person would die much faster due to lack of sleep, rather than any other deprivation (food, water, basic sanitation, etc). So, it is very important that you don’t take any sleep problem lightly.

Learn The Correct Way To Fall Asleep

Sleep apnea is a very serious disease; one that’s responsible for millions of deaths globally. Though this affliction has a prescribed treatment and medication, a natural cure would always be greater and easier to adopt. It is not necessary that whenever there’s a sleep problem there is sleep apnea.

For everyone, there are many traditional ways to use to induce sleep. Few of these are described hereunder quickly. Try them all and see whether it helps the sleep problem you have. In case it does not, then you consider checking with your physician for in depth check up and necessary medication.

First you need to learn to de-clutter your mind before going to bed to bed. Whatever happened during the day has happened; what will happen tomorrow is yet to come. Thus, you need to clear everything from your mind while sleeping. The best would be to learn few meditation techniques and practice these prior to sleep so you could calm your mind.

Second, if you ever find that you are unable to fall asleep, stop trying to push yourself to sleep. Get up from the bed quickly, make yourself a hot cup of tea, milk or hot chocolate – not coffee – and do something you like and has you relaxed. Don’t read ghost stories and see action or horror films.
