There are number of different things, which may cause a person to snore when they are sleeping. But the problem is that if the problem is not dealt with correctly it could lead to them having other health issues to deal with as well. One such problem that can further exacerbate their condition is sleep apnea. But although snoring can be a problem for the sufferer, it is important to remember that it is also a problem for those who are close to them as well.
A person who snores makes a very loud harsh or hoarse breathing sound when they inhale and exhale as they sleep. This is because as they breathe in or out the air causes the tissue in their upper airway (in the nose and throat) to vibrate and so this is when the snoring sound occurs. Unfortunately, because this is a completely involuntary action many people when they sleep do not even realize that they are snoring.
Generally, it is the palate, along with the uvula and tonsils, which are to be found in a person’s upper airway, are the items that are causing the snoring as they obstruct it. There are a number of different causes as to why a person will snore and below we take a look at what some of these are.
1. Because the muscles in a person’s tongue and throat are not well toned and strong this will often result in the tongue becoming relaxed and falling towards the back of the throat. When this happens the throat and airway becomes obstructed so breathing becomes difficult and a person will start to snore.
2. For some people their snoring is caused because there is an excess amount of tissue in the throat area and is often related to a person being overweight. This excess amount of tissue results in an obstruction forming in a person’s airway and prevents the easy movement of air through it as they breathe.
3. For some their snoring is being caused because their palate is long and soft and it may because the uvula tissue in their throat is too soft. Or their snoring may be caused by both of these problems and again it causes a restriction to the back of their throat.
4. The final cause of why a person is snoring is that their nasal airways have become obstructed. Again, it may be too much tissue in this part of their body or it can be caused because there is a build up of mucus in their nasal passages.
Luckily, there are plenty of remedies and devices that people who suffer from snoring can now use to help alleviate or cure the problem. Some people find nasal strips or stop snoring sprays the most effective way of treating this condition. However, for others whose snoring has become very severe then the only way of treating the problem is by undergoing surgery such as Somnoplasty.
